The Skull - Jon Klassen's unsettling & ultimately empowering story
The Skull by Jon Klassen
When it comes to children's literature, there is often a tendency to shy away from the dark and macabre. However, renowned illustrator Jon Klassen has taken a bold step with his book, The Skull. This unique and frankly creepy story is a refreshing departure from the usual whimsical tales, offering children a taste of the mysterious and eerie.
The Skull follows the journey of Otilla, who ventures into the woods only to discover an abandoned house, occupied by a lonely skull and a threatening headless skeleton. Will she save the day?
Jon Klassen will always remain firmly in my list of favourite illustrators. It is a testament to his skill as both an illustrator and writer that he can create such a rich and evocative narrative with so few words.
The eerie atmosphere and dark undertones may be too intense for some young readers. But if you're looking to introduce your child to a different kind of story, The Skull is definitely worth a read. Check out some internals below!
